Somerset Yurts FAQ

How big are the yurts?

The yurts are 19 foot diameter Mongolian Yurts.

How many can the yurt sleep?

The yurts each have a double bed and a double futon. We can also supply a cot-bed for smaller guests :)

The maximum number that can sleep in the yurt is 4 adults or 2 adults and 2 children. Our site capacity is 16 adults - please get in contact if your party is larger.

What's in the yurt?

Each yurt has the following:

Outside each Yurt is a BBQ and gas camping stove

Check in Check out times

Check in from 4pm - if you'll arrive a lot later let us know

Check out is at 10 am

What do we do when we get there

Follow the sign to the car park, which is to the left of the yurt field. We should be about, but if not call Mark on 07811 350176 or Emma on 07766 073461 and we'll show you to your Yurt.

Can we roam freely around the farm?

You can wander freely around the yurt field, but as Hill Farm is a working farm we ask that children are supervised.

We will make you aware of where the cows are grazing, and where tractors may be operating, on a daily basis.

For health and safety reasons you may only visit the farm buildings and yards under supervision - but we are more than happy to show you around, and children especially enjoy seeing the calves and the milking process!

There are some lovely walks around the farm, we'll have some maps for you to take and explore the area.

Can we bring our dog?

Unfortunately we cannot accept dogs due to the nature of the working farm.

Are the yurts suitable for children?

Absolutely! We feel the yurt and the surrounding countryside make a great experience for children. We aim to be as child friendly as possible, and can provide travel cot, highchair etc.

We provide old fashioned games in the yurts and barn to keep you entertained :)

Children (and adults!) will need to exercise caution when the wood burner is lit.

Do I need to bring bedding or towels?

We provide bedding for the double bed. If the futon is to be used as a bed there's a small extra charge of £15 per stay to cover our laundry cost.

We can provide towel bales (a bath towel and a hand towel) for £5 per person...or you can bring your own towels.

We provide tea towels in the kitchen.

What are the cooking facilities?

There is a well equipped kitchen in the nearby barn, including an electric oven and hob, and fridge.

We also provide pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, utensils, glasses, mugs, teatowels etc. All you need to bring is food :) There's also a Dutch Oven available for the fire-pit if you're feeling brave!

Each yurt also has a BBQ, gas stove, and a coolbox.

Ice packs for the coolbox can be exchanged in the facilities freezer to keep your coolbox cold.

Can I cook in the yurt?

We prefer guests to cook outside on the BBQ, gas stove, or in the kitchen, rather than in the yurts. This is from a safety point of view, and to keep the yurts smelling fresh.

There are tea and coffee facilities in the yurt for you to have a morning cuppa :)

Is there firewood and charcoal for the BBQ?

We provide a basket of firewood for you on arrival, this should keep you going for a couple of days, and there's more wood in the Barn for you to top up your log basket as needed (no charge).

You will need to bring your own charcoal for the BBQ.

What are the bathroom facilities?

There are 4 showers and 4 flushing toilets in the nearby barn.

We provide loo roll and hand wash, but you will need to bring your own shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, hairdryers etc.

What pubs/shops are nearby?

The Monkton Inn is the nearest pub, about a mile and a half away, down the hill to the village (quite steep on the way back - you'll realise on the way back why we're called Hill Farm, but it's good for the calorie burning!). The restaurant is rather popular so is likely to need booking in advance if you'd like to eat there http://www.themonkton.co.uk/

The Maypole is a little further away, and would require a bike ride, or car journey http://www.maypole-inn.co.uk/ it's got a larger bar area if you're just after a couple of drinks.

Clavelshay barn is an excellent restaurant, and is about 2 miles away through the country lanes, making a lovely bike ride, or a leisurely walk. Highly recommended for Sunday Lunch! http://www.clavelshaybarn.co.uk/

Proctors farm shop is about 2 miles from our farm, offering local produce

There are plenty of supermarkets within short driving distance of the farm.

The County Town of Taunton is only a short 10 minute drive from the farm.

Can we hire bikes

Yes our friends at six cycles hire bikes locally.

What do I need to bring?

We recommend you bring wellies, waterproofs, and warm clothes, just in case the weather is wet and cold. (It's a working farm in the UK, bring wellies!) You will be warm enough in the yurt with the wood burner, and blankets, but it might be cold out and about.

Wellies are a must have really (have we mentioned wellies enough :) ) as they will keep your feet dry in the morning dew and are also quick and easy to put on and kick off coming in and out of the yurt.

Bring your own food, which can be stored in the kitchen, and in your yurt (each yurt has a cool box)

We can provide details of an excellent bike shop that you can hire mountain bikes from, but please feel free to bring your own.

Bring your camera - you'll want to get some snaps of you in the yurts, and the surrounding countryside!

Do you have a policy for groups?

We ask that groups larger than 6 adults book the whole site - please contact us to discuss your requirements. This ensures you can enjoy yourselves without having to worry about disturbing others. The maximum number for the site is 16 adults.

Can I bring sky lanterns?

As we're a working Dairy farm we don't allow sky/chinese lanterns because of the damage they can cause our and our neighbours livestock - see this news article

Is there disability access?

Please get in touch to discuss your individual requirements.

Where can I park?

On arrival at Somerset Yurts, you will see a sign to the Yurts and the car park. Follow the sign to the car park, which is to the left of the yurt field. We should be about, but if not call Mark on 07811 350176 or Emma on 07766 073461 and we'll show you to your Yurt.

There is no parking in the yurt field - it would spoil the view ;-)

If there's anything we've missed, and I'm sure there's loads! please get in contact!
