Out and about the Quantocks

Having grown up here I tend to take the surroundings for granted, but want to make sure we do justice in promoting the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which the farm borders.

So this morning I thought I’d see how long it took to get to a couple of points on the Quantocks from our farm when I was in the car picking up some bits from a friend.

….I was at Cothelstone Hill car park within about 8-10 mins (could have been quicker but had to reverse for a BT van that got in my way :) ), I started walking as I wanted to get a photo from the top, but quickly realised I wouldn’t make it to the next point I wanted to get to…and be on time for my morning meeting….so onward, and I was then at Lydeard Hill Car Park (not that many cars at 8.15 this morning…in fact only me) in another 5 mins or so.

Here’s a couple of camera phone photos from there – Exmoor ponies on the Quantocks:

There’s a useful list of walks on the Quantocks here: http://www.quantockonline.co.uk/tourism_leisure/activities/walking.html

I tried to take a panoramic film on my phone, but it didn’t really do it justice…so you’ll have to book into one of our Yurts and explore the Quantocks yourselves. (I’ll pop out another day and try again as well :) )

it’s been a while

Just realised it’s been a while since we posted here!

We’ve been very busy getting everything set up, hence the lack of blog updates, but we think the work has been worthwhile with the Yurts and facilities looking great, we’ve added some photos to the gallery so you can see how things are looking.

We’ve had some great weather down here in Somerset, it’s been a really dry May, which is great for holiday makers, but not so great for growing grass for our cows…it’s tricky to know what to wish for!

That’s it for a quick flying update…but more to come soon :)

Frosty start to the day

Brrr bit of a chilly start to the day, of course you’ll be warm on your yurt holiday with your log burner, but feeding animals on the farm this morning was cold again!

Happy new year

It’s been a while since we’ve posted so thought we ought to update the blog and let you know how we’re getting on at Somerset Yurts.

Since getting planning permission granted it’s been a busy time, Emma gave birth to baby William on the 23rd of November – so he’ll be here helping us get set up over the next few months!

William

Some conditions to the planning permission mean we have to supply further documentation on our landscaping plans, lighting, and provision of nesting boxes, all of which need to be approved by the council. We’ll be getting these submitted this week. We’re also drawing up our plan of action for the barn which will provide the facilities for the Yurts.

It’s going to be a busy few months ahead, but it’s exciting to be getting so close to being up and running!

Planning Permission Granted!

We are delighted to announce that planning permission has now been granted for Somerset Yurts!

This means we have a very busy Winter ahead of us, as we convert part of the Dutch Barn into a kitchen, bathroom, and communal area for our yurt guests. We also have some landscaping to do, including the planting of some apple trees in and around the yurt field.

Our plan is to be open for Easter 2011, so if you would like to enquire about bookings for the 2011 season, please contact us via the bookings page.

In the meantime, we are also expecting our baby to make an appearance at some point in the next couple of weeks, so a very busy few months ahead! :)

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

You can also now follow us on Twitter or Facebook :)

Back at the Farm

Well, after a couple of years of thinking, talking, and planning – we are now back at the Farm for good :) We’ve left the rat race to become farmers, and to set up the yurts!

We moved late June, and things have been non stop since! Mark has been busy getting into the farming life, and we’ve finally submitted the planning application for the yurts, after a few delays along the way with wildlife surveys etc. that were necessary for the application. We hope to hear back from the planners towards the end of August, and all going well, we will then crack on with setting up the yurts, and converting the Dutch Barn into kitchen and bathroom facilities for guests.

In the meantime, while we wait for news on the application, I thought I would share a couple of pics taken during the first silage cut :)

UK Set for a Sizzling Summer?

According to ‘Positive Weather Solutions‘ we could be in for a hot summer in 2010!

We are certainly hoping the weather will be good, although we know our cosy yurts will keep you comfy and dry, no matter what the weather :)

Here is what their long range weather forecast predicts:

Summer 2010

June 2010

June starts with some reasonably fine weather, and with several days worth of pleasant sunshine, it will feel warm.  The pattern through June is unlikely to be all that stable, so expect some rain as we pass through mid-month, although again, there will be some pleasant sunshine from time to time, keeping temperatures on the warm to possibly very warm side.  Whereas we can expect some further fine conditions before June is out, there will be some rain around, some of it heavy, so there will be no clear stretch of stable weather as we enter July.  June will on be a warmer than average month.

July 2010

July too starts on an unsettled note, with some rain around, but Summer will emerge, and we can expect some decent drier spells and some warm to very warm temperatures. Through mid-month, there may well be a continuation of the warm, settled weather, good spells of sunshine with just light winds, but towards the end of July things will breakdown a little, with thunderstorms developing,. possibly leading to some flash flooding.  It will begin to feel humid too by late month, so expect the thunderstorms to rumble on a while.  July will reflect a warmer than average month.

August 2010

August starts unsettled too with some thunderstorm activity, but this will break, and some more fine weather will emerge, and with some lovely unbroken sunshine, we may well see some record temperatures.  Towards mid month, there will still be some pleasant weather around with long spells of sunshine, but this will be broken up with periods of unsettled weather.  It will remain warm through the middle part of August.  The latter part of the month again sees some good weather, but this will be short lived, as more showery and cooler conditions move in.  August will reflect a warmer than average month.

Out to Pasture

A couple of weekends ago, the weather and ground were deemed good enough to let the herd out to pasture for the first time since being overwintered in the Barn. I’d never seen this amazing event before, so I grabbed my camera to capture the ladies of the herd heading out to pasture.

Mark and I headed to the top of the field where we’d set out a fence earlier in the day. As it’s the first time for a few months that they’ve been out, I was warned they’d be quite frisky! So we had to stand at the boundaries to remind them of the fences!

When they came into view, I couldn’t help laughing – these usually sedate gentle giants, were prancing around like lambs!! They all charged up to the top of the field, then back down again, then back up again! Some of the cows were rubbing their heads in the dust, and flicking it up over their backs with their front hooves. The little calves in the herd were also enjoying themselves, and seemed to be working out all the goings on, and wondering where they fitted into the heirachy.

After a few frantic charges, they all seemed to settle down and get on with the important task of grazing, while soaking up some sun.

Anyone staying at Somerset Yurts this time next year, will be more than welcome to come along and witness this brilliant event – a real treat, and a sure sign that Spring is here, and Summer is on the way :)

Spring has Sprung at Somerset Yurts!

What a beautiful day we’ve had on the Quantocks today – rather chilly, but fabulous blue skies and plenty of sunshine.

I had a wander around the farm this afternoon, armed with my camera, to try and capture signs of Spring. I didn’t have to look very far! The garden pond is absolutely crammed with frogspawn (or it could be toadspawn – not quite sure!). Snowdrops have been out for a couple of weeks now, but still going strong. I also couldn’t resist a trip to the calf shed, where numerous new additions to the herd at Hill Farm can be found, looking all fluffy and lovely on their straw bedding :)

We have an exciting couple of meetings coming up over the next few days to progress the planning – so we’ll update you as soon as we have more news!

Stocking up for the Woodburner’s

All the snow over Winter has led to a couple of fallen trees on the farm. An Ash tree, in a field called Gotton Down near the planned yurt field, is one such tree that had succumbed under the weight of the snow!

Keen to make sure the wood doesn’t go to waste, we have been busy chopping it up for the yurt’s woodburners. Hopefully this pile will be ready to use this Autumn/Winter, as Ash dries out quite quickly :)
